Help Us Celebrate DSP Recognition Week

Direct Support Professional (DSP) Recognition Week, is Sunday, Sept. 13 – Saturday, Sept. 19, and we want to hear from you!

If a DSP has made a difference in your life or the life of someone you love, share your story with us!Across Citizens Options Unlimited, DSPs support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities at home and in their communities.

They show up no matter the weather. This past winter, they braved snowstorms to provide essential care and help ensure the safety of the people they support. DSPs not only assist people with self-care and daily routines they provide transportation and companionship, and help people explore their communities and pursue their goals. DSPs also create opportunities for self-expression and connection at home and in the community.

For Noah Probert, a DEI Liaison and Camp Loyaltown camper, DSPs have helped him feel empowered and energized to take on each day.

“DSPs help me because without DSPs, I wouldn’t have the care that I need,” Noah said.

Jennifer Bonarrigo, Assistant Director of Operational Support, shared that a DSP working in an Individualized Residential Alternative (IRA) helped someone find a job and volunteer work.

“A lot of times they are basically the foundation to everything that we do,” said Si’chole L. Jackson, Residential Assistant Director. “Everybody that we work with, they are a huge support, and they’re like the first ones on the frontline when it comes to working with the people we support.”

“They really work to fulfill the lives of the people we support every single day,” said Christopher O’Connor, Chief Operations Officer. “I’ve seen DSPs give people an opportunity to experience community things and family events, and all sorts of different life experiences.”

Throughout DSP Week, we’ll share messages of gratitude and stories recognizing DSPs who serve people in IRAs and Intermediate Care Facilities (ICFs). We look forward to celebrating their dedication and contributions!
